TOPIC: Porsche Panamera gearbox failed at 90,000 km.

Porsche Panamera gearbox failed at 90,000 km. 3 days 18 hours ago #1864

Still trying to process this one, so forgive me if I ramble a little. My 2014 Porsche Panamera was fine for almost two years with me, and then on a normal Tuesday morning it refused to go into drive. The dashboard showed a transmission warning, the engine revved, and the car just sat there. I had it towed to a workshop, and after a scan they told me the gearbox has internal damage and that a full replacement is the safest option. They gave me a price for a new unit and a cheaper price for a used one from another car. I honestly did not know there were so many choices. My brother thinks I should sell the car as it is and forget about it, but I have a good feeling about this car, and the body and interior are in great shape. That night I started reading about how these gearboxes are built and opened a page about Porsche cars on a Sharjah website, mostly to understand the difference between rebuilding a unit and swapping it for another one. It explained that a used gearbox can come with hidden wear, and that the control unit often needs to be matched to the car after the swap. I had never thought about that part. A friend who deals with German cars told me that if I go for a replacement, I should ask for a Genuine Porsche gearbox replacement in Sharjah and get the part number and papers in writing, because he has seen people pay for new and receive something else. That made me nervous, in a good way, because now I know what to ask. So here are my questions. Is a rebuilt gearbox ever as good as a new one, or is it always a gamble? If I buy a used one, how can I check its mileage and condition before it goes in the car? Should I expect a warranty on both the part and the labor, and for how long? Also, how many days does a gearbox swap usually take on a Panamera, since I need to arrange a rental car? If you went through a replacement on your Porsche, please tell me what you chose, what it cost, and if you would do the same again. Thanks for reading.
