,,in 1970 tha cylinder BASE STUDS were changed from the smaller 5/16”diameter to the larger 3/8” diameter my early production date Jan/1970 still retains the smaller 5/16” stud. Thr newer 3/8” base nuts were also changed from standard hex to the new 12 point nuts to allow easier adjusting when using a box end wrench...also the Cylinder Barrel featured cutouts on the fins which allowed easier access for a box end wrench to slip OVER the base nuts. Therefore late barrels from 1970-72 are getting harder to find and NOT interchangable withearly models as they are suited (and offset) for the 3/8” diameter studs which display a newe pattern...
So my early Jan/1970 with frame & engine numbers matching is still the early style before the chang over. You know the factory was NOT wasting parts in these harder times....it is one of the last of the Mohicans! |
